systemd messages in /var/log/messages

We are using rsyslog via the boost logging sinks, for logging messages from the application process into /var/log/messages on RHEL 7. The log messages are preceeded with "LogMsg". The rsyslog.conf looks like this:

When it was all working, info messages from my application process were being sent to /var/log/messages. These have the string LogMsg in them and are application specific.

Then I added a line to filter local0 messages after which I restarted the rsyslog service. After that, all went berserk. I rebooted and brought the rsyslog.conf back to its original state. I did systemd daemon-reload and restarted the rsyslog service. I also removed the imjournal state file in /var/lib/rsyslog. This had the following effect:

  • The systemd entries for all the daemon processes such as sensord, snmpd etc. started directly flowing into the /var/log/messages which is not what was happening earlier.
  • The messages from my application did not appear in /var/log/messages which is what I was hoping for.

I dont know where my application messages are going. Also when I run logger with a messages testing, it appears in the /var/log/messages.

So my current problem is: kernel messages are being dumped into /var/log/messages while earlier they were not. Why would this be happening? why have my application messages stopped getting into /var/log/messages? And where would they be going? How do I resolve this? Please help and advise.
